Gunner Annouces in the 3rd; Ponder in the 1st
As expected, former state legislator and Republican candidate for Attorney General Gunner DeLay announced that he will compete in the crowded Republican Primary for the Third Congressional District.
“Congress is spending money like irresponsible teenagers – writing checks they can’t afford to cash. As your Congressman, I will work tirelessly to pass a balanced budget amendment with line item veto power for the president.” (Full release on the jump.)

in the First Congressional District, the Democratic Primary added another name as well as Ben Ponder announced he will run.
“The primary field is a crowded one. There are candidates from all over the district who have chosen to vie for your votes,” said Ponder. ”I am proud to be a part of this field, and I see a large, diverse crowd of candidates as the perfect expression of democracy. There are no front runners, no incumbents, no one who stands apart based on status or position. Instead, there are simply a number of folks who are trying to convince you that they are worthy of your vote.” (His full speech can be found here.)
GUNNER DELAY THE LATEST TO JOIN
RACE FOR 3RD CONGRESSIONAL SEAT
Former State Senator & Prosecutor Pledges The Peoples Voice Will Be Heard
Ft. Smith – On Wednesday, former State Senator & prosecutor, Gunner DeLay entered the race for the 3rd District Congressional seat being vacated by Congressman John Boozman. DeLay hit the ground running, launching his announcement tour on the campus of Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, early Wednesday morning, with stops in his home town of Ft. Smith, Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville, Bella Vista and wrapping up in Harrison at 6pm.
“Part of the problem with Washington, is that our representatives have forgotten who they work for. Gunner looks at this campaign as a job interview, to work for the taxpayers and to fully answer all questions they have,” DeLay press secretary Michael Goessling stated.
At each stop, DeLay hit what are sure to be core issues in his campaign, reducing out of control government spending, creating jobs through less taxation and less regulation, providing a strong national defense, and securing our nation’s borders.
In regard to the national debt DeLay commented, “Congress is spending money like irresponsible teenagers – writing checks they can’t afford to cash. As you’re your Congressman, I will work tirelessly to pass a balanced budget amendment with line item veto power for the president.”
DeLay explained such an amendment would eliminate wasteful earmarks that cost taxpayers billions.
On national defense, DeLay remarked that, “we don’t need to treat terrorists like criminals, they are enemy combatants. They need to be interrogated, tried by a military court, and they should never be held on American soil.”
DeLay concluded by stating that the Third District needs more than a congressman that just votes right. “We need a strong voice for conservative values, putting taxpayers first,” said DeLay.
DeLay served in the Arkansas State Legislature from 1995-1999 and in the Arkansas State Senate from 1999-2003. He was appointed in 2007 to a term as Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney. DeLay, a graduate of the University of Arkansas, lives in Ft. Smith with his wife Robin and their four children.
