Video: Michael Lamoureux Files for State Senate District 4 (UPDATE)
Former State Representative Michael Lamoureux made the trip to Little Rock today to file as a Republican for the special called election to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Sharon Trusty. Also filing today was Democrat John Burnett.
Lamoureux tells the Tolbert Report that he believes his past experience as a state representative has uniquely prepared him for the state senate. Lamoureux served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 2000 until 2006 before being termed limited.
“Sen. Trusty has no equal in terms of constituent services,” praised Lamoureux. “She is a long term supporter of John Paul Hammerschmidt. I think she models her services as a state senator and a public servant after John Paul Hammerschmidt. So she has set a very high bar for me to follow… I want to try to serve the same way she did.”
Lamoureux highlighted the issue of tourism and said this is an important his to his district which boasts of several lakes and recreational areas. “We want to work hard to work with the state to continue to promote this type of activity,” said Lamoureux.
When asked why voters should choose him over his opponent, he pointed to the importance of his legislative experience going into next year’s fiscal session. “We know that 34 of the 35 state senators will have previous legislative experience,” he said. “The question is does Senate District 4 want to be in the category of being represented by the only senator who does not know what they are doing… I don’t think we can afford to hope that someone figures it out and catches what is going on. We need to have someone who is ready to do that from the very first day. I am able to do that.”
Although today is only the first day of filing, neither Lamoureux nor Democrat John Burnett has drawn a primary opponent for the primaries set for October 13. Assuming no one else files Lamoureux will face Burnett in the special general election on January 12 in the first Arkansas election of 2010.
UPDATE – With only one candidate filing for each party primary, the date for the general election has been moved up to Tuesday, December 8.
