Gov. Beebe Defends the Electoral College System in Arkansas

beeberadioAppearing on KARN Radio Program “Ask the Governor,” Gov. Mike Beebe defended the Electoral College system in Arkansas saying “the Electoral College system has served us well.”  The Electoral College system has been a hotly debated topic with the proposed HB1339, which would require Arkansas Electoral votes to go to the Presidential candidate receiving the most votes in the National Popular Vote.  Gov. Beebe stopped just short of opposing the bill but did say that he had concerns the measure would “diminish the power of the smaller states.”  He even hinted at the possibility of a veto if it is sent to his desk but said that he would be willing to listen to both sides.

Generally, the Governor has yielded great influence on this year’s legislators, which have yet to go against him on a single issue.  Will his opposition to the National Popular Vote Bill be enough to stop it?

So what you’re saying is the Governor stated his concern about getting rid of the current system but didn’t come out and oppose the bill that would do that. That sounds a lot like his position on many other issues. Say one thing but don’t take a stand on it.

He’s just waiting until the day after it dies in committee so that he can throw state reps under the bus who did as he instructed them to.
