House rejects “Bailout Bill;” All 4 Arkansas Representatives Vote in Favor

At the risk of being the millionth blog to report this, the House of Representatives just voted to reject the so called financial bailout bill by a vote of 205 to 228. On the Arkansas angle, the roll call vote reveals that all four Arkansas U.S. Representatives voted in favor of the bill. Several news reports are saying that the reason several of the Republican Representatives voted against the bill was the following speech from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as posted on House Minority Leader John Boehner’s YouTube Channel.

"Huckabee" Premiers on Fox News

Gov. Mike Huckabee’s new show called “Huckabee” premiered tonight on Fox News. Huckabee commented on the current news events, took questions from the audience, interviewed Elizabeth Hasselbeck, discussed the bailout with a panel of financial experts, and closed the show playing “Only in America” with a house band made up of people from different Fox News Shows. David Kinkade from the Arkansas Project was apparently crushed that his favorite band “Capitol Offense” was not invited, and calls the show really weird, but I thought it was fun. Yeah, I know I am a boring guy. If you missed it, it airs again tomorrow night at 7:00 and at 10:00. In the meantime, here is Huckabee’s interview with Hasselbeck.

Huckabee on Sen. McCain and the Debate on the Debate

According to an Associated Press report out tonight, Gov. Mike Huckabee criticized Sen. McCain’s statements that he might not appear at tomorrow’s debate. Speaking in Mobile, Alabama, Gov. Huckabee said that Sen. McCain made a “huge mistake” even discussing not attending the debate. He went on to say that attending the debate is “far better than heading to Washington to huddle with senators.” Speaking about the current financial crisis, he said that the “heart of this is greed.”

40 Days for Life in Arkansas

The nationwide movement called “40 Days for Life” spread to Arkansas this week. “40 Days for Life” is a pro-life campaign taking place in appropriately 170 cities in the United States from September 24 until November 2, including vigils in Little Rock, Fayetteville, and Jonesboro. The focus of the movement is to promote a positive pro-life message in the community, to encourage people of faith to pray and fast for an end to abortion, and to conduct a prayer vigil outside a local abortion clinic. In Little Rock, this vigil is being held in front the abortion clinic located at 4 Office Park Dr in west Little Rock, tucked away in between Financial Center Parkway and South Shackleford Road, just off of Hermitage Road. If you are like me, you have driven by here before not realizing that this is where most abortions in Central Arkansas take place.

I stopped by the vigil today on my lunch break and found around four individuals gathered outside the clinic with signs reading “Pray to End Abortion” and “Adoption the Loving Option.” I had the privilege of joining them prayer and singing “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” It was a peaceful demonstration of pro-life individuals who earnestly desire to see an end to abortions in our community. If you would like to find out more about this event, you can email Marti Haslauer (Marti.Haslauer@sbcglobal.net) or Denise Shewmake (tooie1960@msn.com), the organizers for the Little Rock vigil.

ARG: McCain maintains a 12 point lead in Arkansas

American Research Group released a Presidential Poll this week showing that Sen. John McCain holds a 12 point lead on Sen. Barack Obama among likely voters in Arkansas. Sen. McCain attracted 53% of likely voters compared to Sen. Obama’s 41%. These numbers are constant with the Rasmussen Arkansas poll from July which showed 47% of voters preferring Sen. McCain compared to 37% preferring Sen. Obama’s. Although not much has changed with this latest poll, it does revel that undecided voters are breaking more toward Sen. McCain with a six point gain compared to Obama’s four point gain.

Voter Guides Released

Family Council of Arkansas and the Arkansas Right to Life PAC released their Arkansas Voter Guides this week. These are useful tools for seeing where your state candidates stand on the issues. I hope you will review them before you vote. And I hope that you will vote pro-life!

Huckabee’s Harsh Words on the Bailout

Gov. Mike Hucakbee posted some harsh words today on his HuckPAC blog regarded the bailout. I have not yet made up my mind on it. I don’t like it on its face but I have not yet decided if it is a necessary evil or not. For a long term perspective, I believe we need to find a way for the stock market to represent the true value of the companies that are being traded. How we get there in the short term I am not completely sure. Anyway, here is some of what Gov. Huckabee had to say…

“Frankly, I’m disappointed and disgusted with my own Republican party as I watch them attempt to strong-arm a bailout of some of America’s biggest corporations by asking the taxpayers to suck up the staggering results of the hubris, greed, and arrogance of those who sought to make a quick buck by throwing the dice. They lost, but want the rest of us to cover their bets so they won’t be effected in their lavish lifestyles as they figure out how to spend their tens of millions and in some cases, hundreds of millions in bonuses and compensation which was their reward for not only sinking their companies, but basically doing the same to the entire American economy.

It’s especially disconcerting to see the very people who pilloried me during the Presidential campaign for being a “populist” and not “understanding Wall Street” to now line up like thirsty dogs at the Washington, D. C. water dish, otherwise known as Congress, and plead for help. I thought these guys were the smartest people in America! I thought that taxpayers like you and I were similar to the people at the U. N. who have no translator speaking into their headset – that we just needed to trust those that I called the power bunch in the “Wall Street to Washington axis of power.”

The idea of a government bailout in which we’d entrust $700 billion to one man without Congressional oversight or accountability is absurd. My party or not, that is insanity and I believe unconstitutional…more

Signs of the Times

I have recently blogged about the McCain’s Campaign decision not to invest in yard signs in Arkansas and other non-battleground states. To be clear, I agree with this decision. Has anyone ever really made the decision of whom they would cast their vote for President of the United States based on a sign they saw in a yard? In my opinion, yard signs are more important for local elections, in which many times voters have very little information on the candidates. If a voter sees a sign for a local candidate in the yard of someone they know and respect this can make a big difference, especially if this is all they know about the election. My neighborhood is running over with signs. On my evening walk tonight, I counted 16 signs out of the 21 houses on my block, that includes the two candidate signs and my “Vote Pro Life” sign in my front yard.

For what its worth, it seems McCain is winning the national sign battle. Liberal blogger Daily Kos complains today that the Obama Campaign is unwilling to spend money on signs in the author’s home area of Northern Virginia, choosing instead to focus on phone calls and door knocks. He further complains that his neighborhood in running over with McCain/Palin signs. Hmm, so it seems to me that while McCain is choosing to send in signs to the battleground states; Obama is not even buying signs there. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

State Sales Tax Holiday: Still a Good Idea!

Several retailers from around the state, lead by Wal-Mart and Dillards, met today at the state capital to discuss creating a back to school sales tax holiday. They correctly point out that three of our neighboring states have such a holiday – Tennessee, Texas, and Louisiana – which sends many parents across the state line to do their back to school shopping. Perhaps this is also the trip across the state line when they pick up their lottery tickets as Bill Halter is also talking about. The sales tax holiday is a growing phenomenon across the country with 17 states currently with some type of measure. I recently visited Minnesota and they actually went a step farther by eliminating the sales tax on food and clothing year round. You better believe that draws consumers to the Mall of America to take advantage of this tax savings.

Of course, Gov. Beebe’s office was reserved to the idea of a sales tax holiday, pointing out that this could end up costing the state $5 million annually in lost revenue. However, another way of looking at it is that this will save the taxpayers of the state $5 million each year to pay for their children’s back to school supplies. Plus, it will stimulate in-state retail sales as people stay home to shop.

David McCoy, candidate for State Representative in Benton and the surrounding areas of Saline County, actually proposed this idea in a press release he put out several weeks ago. “In many areas of the state, consumers pay a state sales tax, a county sales tax, and a city sales tax on each item they purchase,” said McCoy. “My plan would offer some relief to taxpayers to help them prepare for school.” He added, “This type of idea has been considered in previous legislative sessions, but now when Arkansans face rising costs everywhere, this tax relief is needed more than ever. The sales tax holiday is working well in other states, and it will work here too.”

Also weighing in on the subject is Ann Clemmer, candidate for State Representative in the area of Saline County which includes Bryant. “I think a sales tax holiday is a great idea,” says Clemmer. “It would allow a break for families during that expensive back to school season. As a mother of three, I know how rough the back to school season can be on your pocketbook. Wouldn’t it be nice for the state to give us a break just one weekend? With sales taxes are hovering close to 10% for most in Arkansas–this could be a big help.”

Fundraiser for Rep. Mark Martin

Rep. Mark Martin held a fundraiser today at the Arkansas Poultry Federation Building just a few blocks from the State Capital. Rep. Martin is running for his third term as state representative from district 87 which includes Prairie Grove and the surrounding area of Washington and Crawford Counties. The fundraiser was well attended, especially considering it was about three hours from his home district. Considering the location, it was no surprise that they served some really good fried chicken. It appeared to me that all the political regulars were there although I have not been around long enough to know who the political regulars are. Maybe we should start wearing nametags to these things.

If Rep. Martin is re-elected, he will become one of the most senior Republican representatives in the state house. He has done a great job representing the people of his district and I have no doubt they will return him to his office. I am sure his exclusive interview with the “Tolbert Report” will be enough to put him over the top – the Tolbert Bump. If you want to find out more about Rep. Martin, check out his website. And if you are a candidate at any level who also wants to experience the Tolbert Bump, let me know and the “Tolbert Report” will be glad to come and interview you as well.
